Ruben Alarcon

Hello! My name is Ruben Alarcon and I am a journalism student at San Diego State University. I grew up in the City of Paramount, which is south of Los Angeles, California. My parents immigrated from Mexico before I was born, and all the hard work they did to help me get ahead has helped to shape who I am as a person and my work ethic. I am fluent in both English and Spanish thanks to growing up in a Mexican household. I am looking forward to a career that will allow me to tell people’s stories in a way that will highlight the human qualities in them. My favorite type of writing is feature writing. I am also an artist working with various types of media.

My favorite quote is from a movie titled Tijuana Jackson by Romany Malco Jr. In the movie, the main character says, “Your pain is the pathway to your purpose.” It has really inspired me to overcome the struggles I have faced in life and use them as motivation to help others who may be facing the same struggles. I refuse to cede to the misfortunes of life.
